Can we talk tailgating/football party food for just a sec? I think the food is the best part of game day.

Yes, I get into the game (most of the time), but it doesn't matter to me if the home team is winning or losing just as long as there is good food being served.

The only issue I take with most traditional game day snacks is how unhealthy they can be. Not that I am a huge health nut, but it is definitely nice when there are a few healthier options on the menu for the big game.

I know what you all are thinking right now- healthier food has to be more expensive & that just doesn't jive when you have to feed a crowd for the game. But healthier game day eating doesn't have to empty your wallet. Not when you can shop at your local Save-A-Lot for all your football party needs. ;)

That's right- your local Save-A-Lot has all the fresh (& healthy!) produce, meats, & even the essential paper products you need to make your game day get-together delicious & healthier without breaking the bank!

One of my favorite foods to snack on while watching the game is pizza. And one of my favorite pizzas happens to be a Hawaiian pizza, but that isn't always the healthiest option.

These grilled Hawaiian Pizza Pineapple Bites I am sharing with you all today have all the deliciousness of a traditional Hawaiian pizza minus the guilt.

I conveniently picked up everything that I needed to whip up these quick & easy pineapple bites during my weekly shopping trip to my local Save-A-Lot. Save-A-Lot proves that you don't have to give up freshness to stay on budget. Their produce department was stocked with everything I needed to make this healthier game day snack.

The caramelized grill marks are a must for these pineapple bites. As long as your grill is nice & hot, they should only take 2-3 minutes per side.

I topped mine with sliced almonds & a sprinkle of cinnamon because these pineapple bites are inspired by a Hawaiian pizza that I used to get when I lived in Ohio. But if the almonds & cinnamon are not your kind of thing, then feel free to leave them off.

Hawaiian Pizza Pineapple Bites
by Frugal Foodie Mama
Prep Time: 15 minutes
Cook Time: 15 minutes
Ingredients (8 pineapple bites)
  • 1 medium pineapple, peeled (do not core) & cut into 1/2 inch thick slices
  • 2 tbsp canola oil
  • 1/2 cup of Manita's Roasted Garlic & Herb Pasta Sauce
  • 8 slices of America's Choice Select Smoked Ham
  • 2 sweet mini-peppers, sliced into rings
  • 1/2 cup of Coburn Farms Shredded Low-Moisture Part-Skim Mozzarella Cheese
  • 1/4 cup almond slices
  • Ground cinnamon
Instructions
Preheat your grill at medium-high heat. Rub the canola oil onto the grill grates. When heated, throw the pineapple slices on the grill. Grill on both sides for 2-3 minutes.

Remove the pineapple slices from the grill to top them. Top each slice with 1 tbsp of the pasta sauce, then a slice of the smoked ham, 2-3 pepper rings, 1 tbsp of shredded mozzarella, & then a sprinkle of the sliced almonds. Repeat this for each slice, then return them to the grill & close the lid for 3-4 minutes until the cheese is melted and the toppings are heated through.

Transfer to a serving platter and sprinkle each pineapple bite with cinnamon. Serve immediately.
Enjoy!
