Winter and snow (aka, ski season) is upon us, and it is time to start planning those wintertime family getaways. Whether you are planning to stay close to home, heading to the snowy slopes of Colorado, or heading northeast to ski the mountains of Vermont & New Hampshire, it is no secret that ski & snow vacations for the family can get a little pricey. But there are ways to save money and cut the costs without also having to cut back on the experiences and the frosty family fun.

I have partnered up with my friends at Family Travel Forum today to bring you all the very best tips for saving money on ski passes, lift tickets, equipment rentals, lodging, and so much more this coming ski season. A fabulous wintertime family vacation doesn't have to break the bank, folks. :)

New to skiing or a snowboarding novice? Then be sure to plan your family winter vacation in January! January happens to be Learn to Ski & Snowboard month, a nationwide program that encourages newbies to get into skiing and snowboarding by offering free & discounted lessons, lift tickets, equipment rentals, and discounted ski & snowboarding packages.

There are other ways that you and your family can ski for free or at a discount like the Bring a Friend Challenge, programs that introduce grade schoolers to snow sports (vary by state), and many resorts are now offering programs designed specifically for those family members with special needs. To get more information on which resorts offer the Learn to Ski & Snowboard Month program and the other programs mentioned, be sure to click on over to the Family Travel Forum page.

Another surefire way to save money on your wintertime getaway is to take advantage of the many local and nationwide pass programs being offered. If you and your family are already avid skiers, then you have probably already purchased season passes to your favorite local slopes.

But if you are looking to expand your skiing and snow sports horizons this coming year, the new M.A.X. Pass might be the way to go. The M.A.X. Pass gives you and your family access to 22 different ski resorts.

Another great family pass option for snow & ski vacations is the CityPASS Discount Ticket Book. The CityPASS Discount Ticket Book allows you to combine hitting the slopes with urban sightseeing & shopping in 12 different fun cities across the nation. :) Visit the Family Travel Forum page for more information on this two pass programs as well as other ski & snow programs designed to help families save more money on their wintertime vacations.

Another area that most families look to cut costs when planning and booking a family ski & snow vacation is on the accommodations. Luckily, there are a lot of affordable options out there depending on your and your family's needs. If you can do without the luxuries of a typical resort (like a hot tub), the local ski hostels can be an excellent affordable family lodging option.

Joining a program like the Mountain Collective can give you and your family access to some of the top independent ski resorts as well as discounted lift passes, free day passes, & special lodging rates for members only.

Another budget friendly option for accommodations while you and your family enjoy a winter wonderland is to choose to rent a condo or private vacation home. You can enjoy all the comforts of home & save on dining out since most condos and homes provide a full kitchen.
