Summer Blog Challenge, Day 49- If Were President for a Day...

So, today's Summer Blog Challenge is to tell about what one law you would change if your were President for a day.  Okay, let's be real.  One day in the Presidency would not result in any laws changing... A President is not a dictator and cannot change a law just because he or she wants to (thank goodness!).

Let's just pretend for a moment that during my one day as President I could indeed change a law.  Now, I typically do not get too political on my blog, so I will try very hard not to step up on my soapbox for too terribly long here.  I would pass a national mandate to make marriage for anyone and everyone legal.  Quite frankly, I am sick of all of this state by state foolishness of banning gay marriage here, allowing gay marriage there.  Enough already.  Who is any one of us to tell another person or couple that they should not be allowed to marry?  As citizens, we all pay the same taxes.  We all obey the same laws.  Why on earth should one group be treated as second class under another?  (Yeah, this country has already been over this before. Remember the fights for equal rights for women and African Americans?)    America is supposed to be a country of freedom.  Freedom to say what you want, practice religion how you want (or not all). Why shouldn't everyone also have the freedom to love and marry who they choose?  I am hoping that years from now my children will look back on this time of discrimination like I do about when interracial marriage was illegal.  I hope they will look back and say- what were they thinking?

And please, I would prefer no comments about the sanctity of marriage.  There are plenty of heterosexuals messing that one up.  Go complain to them.

On a not so serious note, if I were President for one day I would have to check out that amazing organic garden that Michelle has been helping to maintain at the White House.  Have you seen this garden??
